Typically in the past boilers where installed with one option on/off setting  which meant your whole house and hot water was heated simultaneously regardless of the household requirement. e.g. heating bedrooms during the day when you only needed heat in your living area or hot water.

Today there has been huge advances which makes heating systems more efficient as we are installing Oil Condensing Boilers with up to 97% heat efficiency and Gas Condensing Boilers with up to 92% heat efficiency in conjunction with setting up individual zones which allows separate settings and controls for each area 1. Hot water 2. Living Area and 3. Bedrooms. You can also install Thermostatic Radiator Valves which allows individual control of the temperature of each radiator in each room.
